Chinese New Year Celebrations In Hong Kong     

 

You're in for an extra special Chinese New Year as we welcome the Year of the Ox. Hong Kong puts on one of the world's biggest Chinese New Year celebrations through a unique fusion of ancient customs and modern entertainment – the epitome of the city's living culture.

Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade
Date : 26 January – Chinese New Year's Day
Route : The parade starts at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui and proceeds along Salisbury Road to Mody Lane, makes a U-turn and ends at New World Centre.
The Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade is one of the best-loved events of the entire New Year celebrations! Radiating the theme of World's Happiest Party, the parade features elaborately decorated floats accompanied by spectacular international and local marching bands and cultural performers. There's a carnival atmosphere as festive crowds line the route around Tsim Sha Tsui East to watch the colourful parade pass by with stunning Victoria Harbour as a backdrop. First staged in 1996, the world-renowned annual event is being sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways for the 11th consecutive year. So be sure to be there for the most memorable start to the Year of the Ox! And if you come dressed in your best Chinese festive outfit, you might be the lucky winner of a surprise gift!
Highlights

• Multicultural international participants include themed floats with performers from Korea, Macau, Spain and Thailand; cheerleaders from Australia and the US; costumed characters and traditional cultural performances from Denmark, Japan and Spain; cultural dances from China, Japan and the US; marching bands and music troupes from Russia and South Africa.

Chinese New Year Fiesta
Date : 27 January - 1 February
Venue : New World Centre and Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui
Festivities linked to the Parade are being extended to the seventh day of the Chinese New Year, in what promises to be a fun-packed and entertaining fiesta for all ages! Pride of place goes to the static display of spectacular floats – this is the perfect opportunity to have a close-up look at all those incredible creations. At night, the floats will be brilliantly lit up. The fiesta also features stage performances by multicultural acts as well as arts and crafts stands and stalls selling souvenirs and festive snacks. And roving artists will bring you fun in every corner of the site! Remember to bring your camera!

2009 Lunar New Year Fireworks Display
Date : 27 January 2009
Venue : Victoria Harbour between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui
Greet the Year of the Ox with a spectacular night of fireworks. Join hundreds of thousands of people on both sides of the harbour as their cheers rise in a crescendo of delight at this magnificent spectacle. It's an incredible part of the New Year celebrations, scaring away demons to ensure good luck. The spectacular backdrop of city lights, harbour and surrounding mountains make this event special. Head to the harbour, get a harbour-view hotel room, or take a harbour cruise and catch the spectacle of a lifetime!

2009 Chinese New Year Race Day (horseracing)
Date : 28 January
Venue : Sha Tin Racecourse
Hong Kong horseracing fans like to see in the New Year with a few bets at the Sha Tin racecourse. You can join in all the fun and excitement on the first day of racing in the Year of the Ox by joining a horseracing tour.

2009 Lunar New Year Cup (soccer tournament)
Date : 26 and 29 January
Venue : Hong Kong Stadium
One of the sporting highlights of the year, this New Year's soccer tournament featuring top overseas teams always provides sports fans with thrill-a-minute action on the pitch.
